Water is an important,
life preserving substance for everyone, but has specific and very
important application in athletics. Athlete's require water to cool
their bodies and lubricate their joints, especially when under
added stress that sports will place on the body. Water is very
important, and so, lack of water is very detrimental to athletes.
Staying hydrated is extremely important in sports because signs of
dehydration may not emerge quickly and so not only will lack of
water hinder your fitness goals, but potentially result in
dehydration.
Water should be your first choice for beverages. No other
substance will cool your body as quickly and keep you hydrated as
well as pure water. All fluid losses are best balanced with the
consumption of pure water. Water is also required regardless of
what temperature you are training in. Since the signs of
dehydration may appear much less quickly when a person is exerting
themselves, the best thing to do is to drink an adequate amount of
water regularly throughout exercise, as well as both before and
after.
To stay hydrated, be sure to drink plain, cool water regularly.
Drink water both prior to and after your physical activity, and
certainly during it. Drink 16 ounces of fluid for every pound you
lose during physical activity.
